The shows aren’t going on and neither will the Dora Mavor Moore Awards.
The Doras, which celebrate excellence in Toronto’s performing arts community, normally take place at the end of June but will now be postponed to an undetermined future date due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
But the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts, which organizes the Doras, will still announce nominations for the prizes in early June via virtual news conference, it said in a news release.
Dora Awards are handed out in theatre, dance and opera.
Dora jurors had already attended 85 per cent of the shows registered with the alliance for the 2019-20 season when theatres went dark earlier this month, so nominees and winners will be selected based on that percentage, TAPA said.
The nominations news conference will be hosted by actors Diane Flacks and Ed Roy.
Fears for public safety during the coronavirus pandemic have led to the cancellations of awards shows and other cultural events around the world.
New York’s Tony Awards, normally held on June 7, have been postponed indefinitely.
Here in Toronto, the Canadian Screen Awards gala scheduled for March 29 was cancelled while the Juno Awards, which were to take place March 15 in Saskatoon, were also called off.
On Thursday, it was also announced that the Luminato Festival would be postponed from this June until June 2021.
The Doras announcement comes just ahead of World Theatre Day on Friday.
“Sadly, we see the unprecedented but necessary closure of Toronto’s theatres in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis,” Dora Awards producer Jacoba Knaapen said in the news release. “We also know that Toronto’s arts community is resilient and resourceful, and we look forward to again celebrating the extraordinary talents of our theatre, dance and opera artists when it is safe for us all to be together again.”
