Andrew Wiggins appears ready to play for Canada in pursuit of Olympic basketball berth

With the Golden State Warriors out of the playoffs, Canadian-born star Andrew Wiggins will apparently join the Canadian national team for a run at an Olympic basketball berth.

On Instagram late Monday, Wiggins — who hasn’t played for Canada since 2015, the year after he was drafted first overall — posted an image of himself with the words Team Canada.

Olympic qualifying will resume in Victoria on June 29, with one ticket to Tokyo up for grabs in a field that also includes Greece, Czech Republic, Turkey, China and Uruguay.

Raptors head coach Nick Nurse will coach the Canadians, who haven’t qualified for the Summer Games since 2000.

Wiggins averaged 18.6 points a game for the Warriors this season.

Andrew Wiggins, driving to the basket against Mexico at the 2015 FIBA Americas tournament, appears set to make his return to the Canadian national team.
